What is A2P 10DLC?

What is A2P 10DLC?

A2P 10DLC refers to a system in the United States that allows businesses to send Application-to-Person (A2P) type messaging via standard 10-digit long code (10DLC) phone numbers. Carriers in the US consider all LeadOwl traffic to be A2P. Carriers’ A2P 10DLC offerings provide better delivery quality and lower filtering risk than long code SMS of the past, using the same phone numbers.

Register now to benefit from improved deliverability and increased throughput in the new verified A2P 10DLC ecosystem.

What do I need to do?

If you do not send any messages to users in the United States using long code numbers, you do not need to do anything, but if you need to send SMS messages to United States numbers you should apply for A2p 10DLC configuration.

How does A2P 10DLC work?

Registration and Approval: Businesses or organizations interested in using A2P 10DLC need to register and get approval for their messaging campaigns. This process involves providing information about the intended use case, business identity verification, and adhering to carrier-specific guidelines.

Number Provisioning: Once approved, the business is assigned one or more 10-digit long codes (10DLC) to send messages from. These long codes resemble regular phone numbers, but they are specifically designated for A2P messaging.

Campaign Setup: The business sets up its messaging campaigns, defining the content and timing of the messages to be sent. Messages can be transactional (e.g., order confirmations, appointment reminders) or promotional (e.g., marketing offers).

Message Sending: The business sends messages to its customers or users using the assigned 10DLC numbers. Messages are typically sent through an SMS gateway provider or directly through an API provided by the wireless carriers.

Carrier Intermediation: Messages sent via A2P 10DLC pass through the carriers' networks. Carriers monitor these messages for compliance with regulations and guidelines to ensure message integrity and prevent spam.

Monitoring and Reporting: Businesses can monitor the delivery and performance of their messaging campaigns through reporting tools provided by their SMS gateway provider or carrier. This includes metrics such as delivery rates, response rates, and any issues encountered during message transmission.

Compliance: Businesses must adhere to carrier-specific guidelines regarding message content, frequency, and opt-out mechanisms. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in message blocking, fines, or other penalties.

Do I need to register? If so, what’s the deadline?

All SMS and MMS messages sent to US phone numbers from unregistered 10DLC phone numbers will be fully blocked after August 31, 2023. 10DLC phone numbers must be fully registered to an approved Campaign under your Brand. This registration requirement took effect on July 5, 2023 with unregistered phone numbers subject to a gradual increase of message blocking. The A2P 10DLC deadline approval takes between 1-3 days.
